Originally from Japan, HIROMI NAKAI completed her professional education at the Wackers Academy in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, a private art academy specializing in figurative drawing, painting, and sculpting. She studied under the tutelage of various renowned Dutch artists such as Sam Drukker and Frank Leenhouts.
Hiromi specializes in still life painting. While her work is grounded in art that retains aspects of the actual world, she creates images that reach beyond static versions of reality and purely representational reproductions. By virtue of her own unique approach, she views her subjects through an interpretive lens that adds a certain mystery beyond their practical, quotidian applications.
Hiromi’s brush strokes breathe a life of inner fluidity and a dreamy, impressionistic quality to her work. There is an effect of ethereal softness that evokes both immediate, even nostalgic notions, that speak to both individual and collective memories. Objects are recognizable but with multi-layered aspects that hint at symbolic forms of expression. This approach enhances the inherent interior beauty of an object and does not limit its appeal in a singular or limited manner. She leaves room for the observer to extract their own perceptions by virtue of their unique experience and emotions. She knows that each piece already contains its own history and individuality that it wishes to share with those who witness it in the incarnation Hiromi has envisioned for it.
