Originally from Japan, HIROMI NAKAI completed her professional education at the Wackers Academy in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, a private art academy specializing in figurative drawing, painting, and sculpting. She studied under the tutelage of various renowned Dutch artists such as Sam Drukker and Frank Leenhouts.
“I paint mainly still life’s. I am drawn to ordinary objects—ceramics, fruit, vessels, and everyday items that often go unnoticed. What interests me is not simply depicting these objects as they are, but transforming them through color, composition, and atmosphere into something that carries a sense of poetry.
In each painting, I explore the relationship between color harmony and contrast, searching for a balance that gives the work both structure and emotion.
For me, painting is not an act of copying reality. It is a process of interpretation. The objects serve as a starting point, but through the language of paint they become something more—moments, memories, moods, or quiet conversations between forms and colors.
My years at art school, and the time spent afterwards visiting museums, exhibitions, and studying art, have shaped the way I look at both paintings and the world around me. When a work of art moves me, I try to understand why. What creates that emotional response? Is it the color, the composition, the rhythm, the light? Learning to observe and analyze these elements has become an essential part of my practice.
I believe that looking deeply is where painting begins. That way of looking continues to shape my work.”
